Founded 1875 in Newark as Prudential Friendly Society by insurance salesman John F. Dryden, first company to offer affordable life insurance to lower-income workers, changed name in 1877 to The Prudential Insurance Company of America> In 1885, Dryden purchased company's one-millionth policy, he served as US Senator from NJ 1902-07> 1896 used image of "Rock of Gibraltar" in ad for first time with slogan "The Prudential has the strength of Gibraltar"> Now largest life insurer in US, over $1.4 trillion of assets under management as of 2018, approximately $3.7 trillion of gross life insurance in force worldwide, operations in US, Asia, Europe, and Latin America; employs 50,000 people worldwide> NJ legislation enacted 1998 authorized Prudential to convert from mutual company owned by policy holders to public company owned by shareholders, conversion completed December 2001 with $3 billion initial public offering, trading of stock on NY Stock Exchange and distribution of $20 billion in stock to 11 million policy holders, conversion aided Prudential efforts to raise capital through public markets> Also 2001 change of name for marketing purposes to Prudential Financial, Inc., retains formal legal name of The Prudential Insurance Company of America> Charles Lowrey named CEO effective December 2018, career Prudential employee for over 40 years, previously served as executive vice president and chief operating officer, International Businesses> Company active in efforts for Newark redevelopment, including sponsorship of Prudential Center sports and entertainment arena, Gateway Center office-retail complex, also constructed new headquarters building Prudential Tower opened July 2015, other major NJ office locations include Holmdel and Somerset.
