(Milltown, feminine hygiene)> Major force in New Brunswick redevelopment, opened new headquarters 1983, centerpiece for adjacent Hyatt hotel, office, commercial projects> Active participant in NJ affairs, with executives holding key positions in interest groups, government-related organizations, focus of philanthropic support on health, education, arts causes> Long-known for integrity by media and public, particularly praised for its public disclosures in response to 1982 TylenolTM tampering crisis leading to poisoning deaths in Chicago area, but series of recent legal actions against company alleging deceptive practices in marketing undermined past reputation, sparked calls for management changes> Adverse legal actions included complications from vaginal mesh implant procedure in which states of California and Washington sued company, accusing it of deception and failing to properly warn patients and surgeons of infection risks> August 2017 verdict by California jury ordered J&J to pay $417 million to woman who claimed her ovarian cancer resulted from use of talc-based products like Johnson's Baby PowderTM for feminine hygiene, verdict included $70 million in compensatory damages and $347 million in punitive damages on ground that J&J failed to disclose internal research showing link between powder and ovarian cancer, case largest verdict of prior judgements against J&J, with some 1,000 other ovarian cancer cases still pending> Alex Gorsky named CEO 2012, graduate of US Military Academy, spent six years in US Army, began his J&J career as sales representative with Janssen Pharmaceutica in 1988>  Other NJ facilities include Somerville (Ethicon); Skillman (Consumer Products); Titusville (Janssen); Raitan (Ortho-McNeil)); Milltown (Personal products); Piscataway (Health Care Systems); Raritan (Ortho Clinical> Robert Wood Johnson Foundation located near Princeton, created pursuant to will of Robert Wood Johnson, single largest J&J shareholder, one of largest funders in US of health research
