Founded 1918 by community hospitals, now represents close to 400 healthcare organizations including hospitals, health systems, nursing homes, home health agencies, hospice providers and healthcare-related business and educational institutions. Issues include federal and state policies and funding, particularly for Medicare and Medicaid programs; relations with insurers and managed care plans; performance standards on treatment quality; mandates on treatment; insurance, waste and labor costs. Conflict within membership over position on 1992 legislation deregulating hospital rates and insurance industry divided membership, led to resignation of 10 urban, teaching hospitals, which formed new association, Hospital Alliance of New Jersey, with some hospitals subsequently rejoining NJHA. Active lobbying, information, research, publishing, joint purchasing, training, continuing education and insurance programs. Hospital Alliance of New Jersey Established by urban and teaching hospitals previously members of NJ Hospital Association following 1992 conflict over Association position on legislation deregulating hospital rates. Now 16 members, about one-quarter of total acute care hospitals, provides over half of uncompensated care in state. Some members also in NJ Hospital Association. Issues include impact of federal Medicaid cutbacks on teaching hospitals, expanding access to health care for low-income residents and those without insurance coverage. Medical Society of New Jersey
Founded 1766, oldest professional society in US, established to provide stature to professionally trained physicians during period prior to government licensing and to set guidelines for fees. Governed by some 200 members of House of Delegates comprised of elected county medical society delegates, chairs of committees, representatives of specialty medical societies, medical students, others. Primarily networking, information, lobbying. Recent issues include proposed reform of federal healthcare legislation; cutbacks of Medicaid funding; restrictions on prescriptions of opioids; relations with health insurers; availability and costs of malpractice insurance; restrictions on fee reimbursement under NJ automobile insurance legislation, scope of practice of allied health professions; professional licensing standards; restrictions on physician investment in related medical service businesses. New Jersey State Nurses Association Established 1901, constituent member of American Nurses Association. Represents 125,000 registered nurses and advanced practice nurses as advocate for nursing profession through lobbying. Nonprofit foundation, Institute for Nursing, provides continuing education, scholarships and research grants, networking opportunities and job listings Major issues include federal and state health reforms and funding; nursing shortage; managed care relations; working conditions and compensation; malpractice liability and insurance; scope of practice with physicians, other health professionals; professional disciplinary standards and licensing. Founded 1870 as New Jersey State Dental Society, adopted current name 1969, also 13 regional, county, . and specialty societies. Represents 4,700 dentists, two-thirds of total practicing in state. Issues include liability insurance; compliance with NJ opioid addiction prevention program; relations with insurers; waste disposal; support of fluoridation in public water supplies; professional licensing and continuing professional education. HealthCare Institute of New Jersey Founded 1997, trade association of research-based biopharmaceutical and medical technology industry. Members include major health companies like Johnson & Johnson, Merck, Pfizer, Bristol-Myers Squibb, BD, Eli Lilly, Stryker, Novartis etc. Seeks to raise awareness, understanding and public support for industry among elected and appointed officials, media, citizens and opinion-leaders. Conducts research and publishes studies on industry’s impact on NJ quality of life and economy. Issues include federal proposals to allow negotiation of prices, import of cheaper drugs for use in Medicare, Medicaid, other programs; repeal of medical device tax imposed in enactment of Obamacare health insurance program; state restrictions on opioid prescriptions by physicians. Formerly NJ Association of Health Care Facilities. Statewide trade association representing long-term care providers, including licensed nursing homes, sub-acute care, adult day healthcare, assisted living, and residential health care facilities, associate members include suppliers, others servicing industry. Provides lobbying, research and policy support for long-term care providers on legislation, state and local regulation, also publishes online directory of facilities. NJ affiliate of American Health Care Association, National Center for Assisted Living and Assisted Living Federation of America. Advocate for expanded government support of elderly and disabled individuals and expanded access to long term care. Issues include level of reimbursement for patient care, relations with health insurers, facility licensing and regulation. |
