The Trenton House Hotel, converted from a Georgian-style residence to a hotel in 1824, hosted the Marquis de Lafayette in that same year during his American tour and in 1861 was the site of a luncheon honoring President-elect Abraham Lincoln as he stopped in Trenton to address the state legislature on his way to Washington for his inauguration. Located at the intersection of East Warren and North Hanover Streets, it was the center of political, business and social life for many years. Wire drawing machine at plant founded in 1848 by John A. Roebling on a 25-acre site along the Delaware & Raritan Canal in Chambersburg (now a part of Trenton) for his wire rope business, which grew to become the largest wire rope and cable business in the world. Roebling designed the buildings and machinery and directed the company until his death in 1869, when his three sons Washington, Ferdinand, and Charles took over. The younger Washington, along with his wife, also supervised the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge which used the wire cables made by the firm. Image: Library of Congress

John Fitch, a Trenton gun maker, invented the first steamboat carrying passengers and freight, with a successful trial run made on the Delaware River on August 22, 1787, in the presence of delegates convened in Philadelphia for the Constitutional Convention. Fitch's boat carried up to 30 paying passengers on numerous round-trip voyages between Philadelphia and Burlington during the summer of 1790, but he ultimately was unable to make the service a successful commercial venture. The American Saw Company was founded in 1866 with its office in New York and its factory in Trenton, located next to the John A. Roebling Sons factory complex. The Mercer Runabout, auto made by the Mercer Auto Co. founded in Trenton in 1909 with financing from the prominent Roebling and Kuser families, was a leading racing and pleasure car during the 15-year life of the company. The company's founders included Washington Roebling II, nephew of his namesake uncle who designed the Brooklyn Bridge and expanded the John A. Roebling Sons wire rope company founded by his father John A. Roebling. Washington Roebling II died in the sinking of the Titanic on April 14, 1912, as he and a friend returned from a European tour inspecting auto manufacturing plants. Workers at sewing line during World War II at Switlik Parachute Co., which was the largest supplier of military parachutes during the War, including making the one used by future President George H. W. Bush when he was shot down over the Pacific in September 1944. The company was founded by Stanley Switlik in 1920, and still is owned by his descendants. It has diversified to manufacture a range of equipment including inflatable life rafts and life jackets and other survival products for the aviation, marine, and military markets.
