Largest private university in NJ. Not-for-profit, nonsectarian, with two campuses in NJ and affiliate locations in United Kingdom and Canada. Founded 1942 as junior college, achieved four-year status in 1948 and university designation in 1958. Named after benefactor Colonel Fairleigh S. Dickinson, co-founder (with Henry Becton) of Becton Dickinson.medical products firm. Original campus located in Rutherford, in 1958 acquired former Vanderbilt-Twombly estate in Madison and Florham, landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted, designer of Central Park, also commissioned to design landscape for estate (now Florham Campus). Florham Campus emphasizes liberal arts undergraduate education; Metropolitan Campus bridges communities of Teaneck and Hackensack, ten miles from NY City, student population comprised of over a third minority or international students from over 70 nations, also variety of co-op education experiences and large proportion of graduate students. Undergraduate enrollment 43% male, 57%  female. Offers over 100 undergraduate and graduate degree programs, including doctoral programs in pharmacy, nursing practice, clinical psychology and school psychology; and Silberman College of Business, accredited business school with MBA and other degree and certificate programs. Degree programs also at two FDU locations outside US: Wroxton College, in Oxfordshire in England, and Vancouver Campus in Canada. Features career-oriented programs on schedules tailored to student schedules on days, evenings and weekends. New graduate degrees in animation, including Master’s of Arts, Master’s of Fine Arts, five-year Bachelor’s of Arts/Master’s of Arts option, and six-year Bachelor’s of Arts/Master’s of Fine Arts option. Ranked #44 in Regional Universities-North; #21 in Best Value; #45 in Best for Veterans in 2022 US News & World Report Best Colleges. Alumni include NJ state senator and former Governor Richard Codey; former speechwriter for Presidents Reagan and George H.W. Bush, current author, media commentator and columnist Peggy Noonan; astronaut and entrepreneur Gregory Olsen.  $100 million capital campaign funded new Campus Union Building for Metropolitan Campus; new Science Building; renovation of the current science facilities into  state-of-art home for Silberman College of Business; and upgraded athletics facilities on Florham Campus. Michael J. Avaltroni named as ninth president effective April 2023, previously interim president since January 2023 and former University Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs; dean of the School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, also served as a faculty member and chair of  Department of Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Sciences. .
