Founded 1870, one of oldest technological universities in US, first college in America solely dedicated to mechanical engineering, now focused on applied research..Campus includes family estate of Stevens family (America's “first family of inventors”),  patriarch John Stevens a colonel in Revolutionary War, purchased present site of 55-acre campus overlooking Hudson River from State of NJ 1784, later as engineer adapted British locomotive for American manufacture and operation as steam locomotive, also pioneered development of steamboat, son Robert Stevens invented T-rail, form of railroad track in use today throughout world, with brother Edwin built and operated Camden & Amboy Railroad, also active in design and construction of ironclad vessels for US Navy. College established with 1870 bequest from Edwin. Campus encompasses Castle Point, highest point in Hoboken, and several other buildings around city. Student body represents some 60 countries, co-educational since 1971, now about 30% female. 35 Undergraduate Majors (engineering, business management most popular); 58 Master's degree programs; 22 Ph.D. programs in engineering, computer science, management, basic sciences, undergraduate degree in humanities; dual degrees combining technical disciplines with humanities, and accelerated, joint-degree programs in medicine, dentistry and law with leading area graduate schools; Master of Engineering and Management program in concurrent engineering, first of its kind in nation. First major institution in US to require in 1982 computers for all students. Rankings include #2 in NJ for salary potential in 2017-18 Payscale College Salary Report; #2 in US for "Colleges with Smallest Gender Gap in Earnings from Graduates" by Forbes 2018; #4 in US among “25 Colleges That Are Worth the Money” by CNBC, 2018. Class of 2018 reported record-high average starting salary of $71,400. Graduates include 1995 Nobel Prize in Physics winner Frederick Reines (class of 1883) for his co-detection of neutrino; Alexander Calder (class of 1919) artist known for colorful hanging mobiles.
