Named after statesman who played key role in formulating US Constitution in 1787, served in first US Senate, elected governor of NJ in 1791 and appointed to US Supreme Court by President George Washington in 1793. Established 1855 as Paterson City Normal School to train teachers for Paterson public schools, became State teachers college 1923, in 1936 began offering general college courses to students not planning teaching career, as well as a four-year general elementary curriculum, in 1937 name changed to New Jersey State Teacher's College at Paterson, in 1971 to The William Paterson College of New Jersey and June 1997 to William Paterson University of New Jersey. 370-acre campus in Paterson and Haledon, much of it on former estate of Garret Hobart, vice president of US under William McKinley, featuring turn-of-century manor house, became new home  in 1951 after purchase by State. Third most diverse public university in NJ, and nearly 30% of students first in their families to attend university, designated as a Hispanic-serving institution with over 27% of students claiming Hispanic heritage. First and only public NJ college requiring new undergraduates to take course on civic engagement. 
Five colleges: Arts and Communication, Cotsakos College of Business, Education, Humanities and Social Sciences, and Science and Health,with 53 undergraduate degree programs, 24 master's degree programs and doctoral programs in clinical psychology and doctor of nursing. Also offers Honors College program for academically gifted students with 10 tracks of study. Most popular majors education, health-related professions. Partners with Mercer County Community College to offer several bachelor’s degrees for Mercer graduates on college’s West Windsor campus. Solar panel installation ranks among 10 largest university installations in US, supplying 15% of WPU energy needs. Campus features ten residence halls for 2,600 students; University Hall, new 80,000-square-foot academic building with class rooms and dedicated laboratories and clinical spaces for programs in nursing, communication disorders, and public health; Science Complex with nearly 100 research labs and 50 teaching labs; Russ Berrie Professional Sales Laboratory computerized multimedia facility that simulates business office environments; and Financial Learning Center with simulated trading room. HD-TV broadcast studios and radio broadcast studios, music recording and audio production facilities; film, animation, and graphic design labs. Student-run WP 88.7 FM (won 2018 Marconi Award for “Noncommercial Station of the Year”) and WPTV-6 TV network recognized among nation's best student broadcast stations. President Kathleen Waldron since 2009, served as president of Baruch College of City University of New York 2004 to 2009, dean of College of Business at Long Island University 1998 to 2004, previously at Citibank for 14 years, directed strategic planning for Global Private Bank and served as president of Citibank International in Miami, holds doctorate in Latin American history.
