While best known for ocean swimming at its shore beaches, New Jersey has been the site for some notable man-made pools. In 1912, the Palisades Amusement Park in Fort Lee added a pool 400 by 600 feet in dimension which it promoted as the world's largest salt-water swimming pool. Its claim, however, was subsequently disputed since the pool used water pumped from the Hudson River, with a saline content below that of ocean waters. The Palisades Park pool also was one of the first to generate artificial wave action, with large mechanized pontoons moving up and down as they rotated, creating a one-foot wave in the pool.

The Palisades Pool also became the center for one of New Jersey's most significant civil rights protests during the summers of 1946 through 1948, when African Americans supported by white sympathizers attempted to gain admission to the pool in defiance of its whites-only membership policy. These efforts later provoked litigation by the American Civil Rights Union and demonstrations at the Park's gates organized by the Congress of Racial Equality, with the Park finally opening the pool to African Americans in 1949. Reports persisted, however, that even in later years the Park management discouraged integration through informal means of making minorities feel unwelcome. The pool, along with the amusement park, closed in 1971.

Another large pool in the state, the Monte Carlo Pool in Asbury Park, was located across the street from the beach with an underground tunnel allowing bathers direct access to walk through the tunnel from the pool to the beach. The Monte Carlo's water supply was piped from the ocean and treated through filters.  Although smaller than the Palisades Park pool at 180 by 200 feet, it also was promoted as the world's "largest saltwater pool" given the questions over whether the water taken from the Hudson for the Palisades pool truly qualified as "salt."

Apart from these large public pools, the surge in post-World War II suburban housing also saw a proliferation of pool-building by communities and private swim clubs and by builders as backyard amenities in upscale homes.
