Founded 1855 in Newark as Newark Normal School as a teachers college, In 1913 name changed to New Jersey State Normal School when state took control of college, changed again to New Jersey State Teachers College in 1937, moved to 150-acre Union campus 1958, on land acquired from Kean family and adjacent to Liberty Hall, home constructed before Revolutionary War by NJ's first state Governor, William Livingston, and resided in by descendants in Livingston and Kean families, including former Governor Thomas H. Kean. Liberty Hall acquired 2007 from Kean family, now operated by foundation and University as Liberty Hall Museum. Third largest public university in NJ behind Rutgers and Montclair State, largest producer of teachers in state, first comprehensive program dedicated to development of new  mathematics, science and technology teachers and researchers--NJ Center for Science Technology and Mathematics. Five undergraduate colleges – College of Business and Public Management, College of Education, College of Liberal Arts, College of Natural, Applied and Health Sciences, and Michael Graves College – offer more than 50 undergraduate degrees over full range of academic subjects. Nathan Weiss Graduate College offers six doctoral degree programs and more than 60 options for graduate study leading to master’s degrees, professional diplomas or certifications. Only public American university with full campus in China, Wenzhou-Kean University, all classes at 500-acre campus in  China’s Zhejiang province taught in English. Also operates Kean Ocean, satellite campus in Toms River in partnership with Ocean County College, students completing associate’s degree can continue study for Kean bachelor’s degree. Kean Skylands, new 1,100-acre campus in Morris County designed to serve as outdoor living laboratory for field-based scientific study and other classroom and field instruction. Ranked #136 (tie) in Regional Universities North, #41 in Tops in Social Mobility in Top Public Schools in 2020 US News & World Report, Best Colleges; named #2 (behind only Thomas Edison) among Top 10 Best Online Colleges in NJ by ValueColleges.com, offers six undergraduate online degree programs in criminal justice, management-human resources management, psychology, accounting, management-general business, and nursing (RN to BSN program only open to RNs). NJ Education Commissioner Lance Repollet named new president effective July 2020, succeeded President Dawood Farahi who had served since 2003. Repollet named 2018 to head NJ Department of Education, previously superintendent of Asbury Park public schools and principal and teacher, holds master's degree in educational administration from Kean. Announced May 2025 intent to absorb New Jersey City University pending regulatory approvals.
