Frank Hague (1876- 1956) served as mayor of Jersey City from 1917 to 1947, Democratic National Committeeman from New Jersey from 1922 until 1949, and Vice-Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 1924 until 1949. Known as one of the most powerful political bosses in the nation, he reportedly was worth some $10 million at his death, his annual City salary never exceeded $8,500. the only known legitimate source of his income. Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, now within Liberty State Park in Jersey City, was constructed in 1889 and operated until April 30, 1967. It was added in 1975 to the National and New Jersey Register of Historic Places. The heavyweight championship fight between Jack Dempsey of the United States and Georges Carpentier of France took place on July 2, 1921 at a specially-constructed wooden bowl arena at Boyle's Thirty Acres in Jersey City. Dempsey knocked out Carpentier in the fourth round of the fight, which was boxing's first million dollar gate and the first to be broadcast on radio. The 80,000 in attendance included Mayor Frank Hague; New Jersey Governor Edward I. Edwards; the three children of Theodore Roosevelt; industrialists Henry Ford; John D. Rockefeller, Jr.; William H. Vanderbilt; George H. Gould; Joseph W. Harriman; and Vincent Astor; entertainers Al Jolson and George M. Cohan; and literary figures H.L. Mencken, Damon Runyon, Arthur Brisbane, and Ring Lardner. Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City was opened in April 1937 after being constructed under the Works Progress Administration created by President Franklin Roosevelt.
The Colgate-Palmolive building in Jersey City circa 1935. The original soap factory was built on the site in 1847 and the buildings on the 34-acre site were demolished in the 1980s after production ceased. The famous clock was built in 1924 to replace an earlier clock and was the world's largest clock with a 50-foot diameter face and a minute hand 25 feet long; it has been preserved and relocated to a location on the ground near the present Goldman Sachs Tower.
