For academic year 2024-2025 academic year, 169 colleges and universities are active in New Jersey - 32 public and 137 private schools. By school level, there are 62 four years or higher, 40 two but less than four years, and 67 less than two years. Total enrollment, according to preliminary state government data, was just over 383,000 students in fall 2023. Rutgers, the state university, is the largest of the public colleges with approximately 67,000 students enrolled at its three campuses in New Brunswick, Newark and Camden in the 2024-25 academic year.

The average annual undergraduate tuition in New Jersey for in-state students at public institutions is around $14,000 to $16,000. but out-of-state students pay more, typically $28,000 to $32,000 per year. Tuition at private institutions tends to be higher, with an average annual cost of about $35,000 to $45,000. These figures are for tuition alone and do not include additional costs such as fees, room and board, books, or other expenses, which can add significantly to the total cost.

Financial aid, scholarships, and grants are available and can reduce the net cost of attendance for eligible students. Nearly half of working-age New Jersey adults held a college degree, and another 3% hold a high-value non-degree credential, which places New Jersey seventh among all states for post-secondary attainment. The average acceptance rate for New Jersey colleges is 72.75% and the average graduation rate was 57.58% in academic year 2020-2021. '

For the 14th year in a row, Princeton topped US News & World Report’s annual list of the best universities in the nation, released in September 2024. All three Rutgers campuses, New Brunswick, Newark, and Camden, also made the US News top 100 list.
