Black bear
The black bear, New Jersey's largest land animal, is now estimated to number 3,500 in the state, with the highest numbers in northwestern and central regions, but sightings have been reported in all counties. Image: New Jersey Division of Fish & Wildlife, Department of Environmental Protection
Brook trout

wild turkey
The wild turkey, which had vanished from New Jersey in the 19th century, was reintroduced by the state Department of Environmental Protection by importing 22 birds in 1977, a population which has grown to exceed 20,000 birds in 2015. Image: National Park Service/Don Mitchison
Pine Barrens tree frog
Pine Barrens Tree Frog, which is only 1 and 1/2 to 2 inches in length, is found in the Pinelands of southern New Jersey, as well as in North Carolina, South Carolina, south-central Alabama, and along the Florida panhandle. Image: US Fish & Wildlife Service/R. Tuck
Bobcat
The bobcat, believed in the 1970s to no longer survive in New Jersey, has recovered somewhat as a result of state restoration programs, but remains an endangered species under legal protection from hunting. Image: Bureau of Fish & Wildlife, NJ Department of Environmental Protection
White-tailed buck
White-tailed buck. New Jersey's deer population is estimated to exceed 100,000, and in the 2014-15 hunting season, the state reported a total deer harvest of 52,704 by bow and arrow and firearms. Image: Division of Fish & Wildlife, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Eastern coyote
Eastern coyotes, once rare in New Jersey, have now been sighted in nearly all municipalities, with adults ranging between 20 and 50 pounds. Image: Division of Fish & Wildlife, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection
Monarch butterflies
Monarch butterflies annually migrate 2,800 miles from the north to spend the winter in Mexico, with New Jersey a central site for monitoring their population. Image: US Fish & Wildlife Service
Atlantic brants
Atlantic brants, a member of the goose family, winter in large flocks along the Atlantic Coast, with some 70% of the total population wintering in New Jersey. Image: US Fish & Wildlife Service
Timber rattlesnake
The timber rattlesnake inhabits three distinct areas – the Kittatinny Ridge and the northernmost portion of the Highlands as well as the Pinelands of southern New Jersey. The copperhead is limited to hilly, forested regions in portions of northern New Jersey and a few isolated, hilly areas of Hunterdon and Somerset counties. Red fox
The red fox, along with the grey fox, is one of two fox species found in New Jersey. It is recognized by its pointed ears, slender muzzle, slanted yellow eyes, bushy long tail, coupled with its small dog size and typical orange-red coloration. Image: Gary Lehman/NJ Department of Environmental Protection
Bog turtle
The bog turtle, an endangered species in New Jersey, is found in wetland habitats with moist soils, and is now primarily limited to remaining rural areas of Sussex, Warren, Hunterdon and Salem counties. Image: NJ Department of Environmental Protection
Eastern tiger salamander
The eastern tiger salamander is an endangered species in New Jersey due to the loss of seasonal woodland ponds to development and pollution which are its breeding habitat. State law, the Freshwater Wetlands Protection Act, now restricts activities which threaten the remaining ponds. Image: NJ Department of Environmental Protection
Aedes mosquitoes

American woodcock
The American Woodcock, an upland shorebird with a long beak, is found in large numbers in Cape May during the fall migration foraging in moist woodlands and thickets, replenishing their fat reserves by eating more than their weight in earthworms daily. Image: US Fish & Wildlife Service
Horseshoe crabs
Horseshoe crabs on Delaware Bay beachfront. The fat-rich eggs laid by the crabs are crucial food for migratory birds to regain bulk and restore energy needed for the final leg of their non-stop, 2,000-mile trip to their Arctic breeding grounds. Image: Delaware River Basin Commission
Muskrat
Muskrat in Cape May. Muskrats were once prevalent throughout the state, and formed the core of a trapping and fur industry which began in the colonial period and supported New Jersey's leading role in the making of fur coats and hats. Image: Peter Massaas/Flickr CC by SA 2.0

Bees
Three main types of bees are found in New Jersey: honey bees, bumble bees, and carpenter bees. The majority of honey bees--distinguished by their amber ½ inch body covered with hair--in the state are kept in managed colonies for honey harvesting. In recent years, their populations have sharply declined, with the causes still being evaluated. Honey bees are distinguished by Bumble bees have round yellow and black bodies covered in fine hair. Carpenter bees, which drill tunnels in wood to lay their eggs, are similar in appearance to bumble bees but with black and shiny their abdomens. Image: ALCO Animal & Pest Control
Brown bat
The Little Brown Bat is one of six bat species in New Jersey, but its numbers have been sharply reduced by a fungal disease called the White Nose Syndrome. Brown bats prefer to roost in manmade structures during the summer, and often hibernate during the winter in mines or buildings. Bats are significant predators of insects, particularly at night. Green sea turtles, which may live to some 100 years old, generally are found in New Jersey waters between summer and fall, and migrate south to warmer water when temperatures cool. They are a threatened species, with their populations reduced by entanglement in fish nets and lines, habitat degradation, pollution and higher ocean temperatures from climate change.
