 -- New Jersey Transit

New Jersey Transit was created by law in 1978 during the Administration of Governor Brendan Byrne as a state authority chaired by the Commissioner of the Department of Transportation. Although its board is chaired by the commissioner of the state Department of Transportation and its  board members appointed by the governor, the legislation establishing the agency authorized it to be exempt from certain legal provisions governing the NJDOT and other state departments and agencies in such areas as purchasing and in hiring, promoting and compensating its personnel. The governor is authorized to veto action of the agency through  rejection of minutes submitted for review after each board meeting.

NJ Transit began operating with the consolidation of several private bus companies in North Jersey, with the largest of these the bus system operated by Transport of New Jersey, a unit of the Public Service Electric & Gas Company, the state's largest public utility. PSE&G had commenced its transit services as electric trolleys in the first decades of the 20th century. In the early 1980s, NJ Transit acquired the commuter train operations of Conrail connecting towns in northern New Jersey with New York City.

       Currently, NJ Transit
operates all passenger and commuter rail lines in the state, with the exception of Amtrak; the Port Authority Trans-Hudson (PATH), line of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; the PATCO Speedline of the Delaware River Port Authority; two SEPTA Regional Rail lines (the West Trenton Line and the Trenton Line); and a few short-line tourist trains in southern and northwestern parts of New Jersey. Most of NJ Transit's trains end at either Pennsylvania Station in New York City or Hoboken Terminal in Hoboken. NJ Transit began service between Atlantic City and Lindenwold in 1989 and in the 1990s was extended to Philadelphia.

NJ Transit also operates three light rail systems in the state. The Hudson-Bergen Light Rail connects Bayonne to North Bergen, with planned expansion into Bergen County communities. The Newark Light Rail is the only subway system entirely in the state, but it is only partially underground. Its Main Line connects Newark Penn Station in Downtown Newark with outer parts of the city, ending at Grove Street station in Bloomfield. The Broad Street Line of the subway, the first component of the Newark-Elizabeth Rail Link, connects Newark Broad Street Station to Newark Penn Station. The last of the three light rail lines is the River Line which connects Trenton and Camden.

-- Private bus carriers

In addition to NJ Transit bus service, privately-owned bus carriers offer service throughout New Jersey. Most of these carriers are supported by state subsidies to offset operating losses and utilize leased  buses obtained by the state with federal and state funds. These include A&C Bus Corp. (Hudson County area);  Coach USA (northern and central region south to Princeton under subsidiary names Hudson Transit; Olympia Trails; Suburban Transit; and Rockland Coaches); Academy Bus (Burlington/Middlesex/Monmouth/Ocean County area); DeCamp Bus Lines (Essex/Passaic County area); Lakeland Bus Lines (Morris/Somerset/Union/Sussex County area); Martz Trailways (Allamuchy-Panther Valley-Hackettstown area to New York and northeastern Pennsylvania); and Susquehanna Trails (Central/Western Pennsylvania to Somerville, Newark and New York). Additionally, national long-distance bus carriers such as Greyhound and Trailways offer service in the state. Over 200 private bus companies also provide public and private school bus services under contract with school districts and operators of private schools subject to safety regulations and other oversight by the New Jersey Department of Education and twice-yearly inspections by the Motor Vehicle Commission.

-- Bi-state Authorities

New Jersey's major transportation connections to New York, Pennsylvania and Delaware also are served by bridges, tunnels and other infrastructure, along with transit services, operated by bi-state autonomous authorities created by legislation between the states and approved by Congress.

The largest of the authorities is the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey created in 1921, which owns and operates in New Jersey the George Washington Bridge, the Goethals Bridge, the Bayonne Bridge, the Outerbridge Crossing, the Lincoln and Holland Tunnels, Newark Liberty International Airport, and the PATH rapid transit system, along with port facilities in Port Newark and Elizabeth. Under contract with the South Jersey Transportation Authority, the Port Authority also manages Atlantic City International Airport. The Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, first opened in 1950 to consolidate bus operations in a central facility,  is the nation's largest and busiest bus terminal, serving 66 million bus passenger trips in 2014. In March 2016, the Port Authority committed to constructing a new terminal in Manhattan to replace the current facility.

In the southern region of the state, the Delaware River Port Authority, a bi-state agency of Pennsylvania and New Jersey, operates in the Philadelphia-Camden metro region the Ben Franklin Bridge; Walt Whitman Bridge; Commodore Barry Bridge; Betsy Ross Bridge; and PATCO transit line. In the Delaware Bay and lower Delaware River, the Delaware River and Bay Authority, a bi-state agency of New Jersey and Delaware, operates ferry services connecting Cape May with Lewes, Delaware and the city of Salem with Delaware City. It also owns and manages the Delaware Memorial Bridge and Millville and Cape May airports.

-- Amtrak

Amtrak provides rail service along the Northeast Corridor  with its major stops in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York and Boston. In New Jersey, some of Amtrak's trains stop at stations in Trenton, New Brunswick, Metropark and Newark. NJ TRANSIT customers can connect to Amtrak at Newark, Trenton, Metropark, New York and Philadelphia.
