Founded 1923, 200-acre campus with 10 academic buildings located 20 miles southeast of Philadelphia. Formerly Glassboro State College, re-named 1992 in recognition of $100 million gift, largest gift at that time ever bestowed on public college or university, from  Henry M. Rowan and wife Betty; Henry an engineer who developed improved industrial induction furnaces, founded Inductotherm Industries, which became largest global manufacturer of smelting and heating systems for metal and casting producers, Rowan died December 2015 at age of 92, daughter of Rowans, Virginia Rowan Smith, continues as member of Rowan board of trustees, also Chair of Inductotherm Corporation and Group Vice President of Inductotherm Group.

Largest enrollment in business administration, communication, elementary education, law-justice. January 2012 report by state advisory committee appointed to evaluate higher education restructuring, including dissolution of University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey,  proposed plan to merge Camden campus of Rutgers University into Rowan, but opposition from Rutgers officials, faculty, alumni and political leaders successfully blocked plan, subsequent legislation enacted June 2012 rejected merger, but approved acquisition by Rowan of UMDNJ School of Osteopathic Medicine in Stratford and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences; created joint Rowan/Rutgers-Camden governing board to promote collaboration between Rowan and Rutgers-Camden in health sciences research and teaching through new Rowan/Rutgers-Camden College of Health Sciences supported with $50 million state appropriation; also granted  Rowan status as Research University to assist in obtaining research funding> After restructuring, Rowan joined Michigan State University as only institutions in US offering medical school programs for both doctor of osteopathy and doctor of medicine (D.O. and M.D.) degrees. Opened Cooper Medical School of Rowan University in 2012, partnership with Cooper University Hospital based in Camden, authorized by 2009 by executive order of Governor Jon Corzine, first new medical school in NJ in over 35 years and only four-year MD-granting medical school in South Jersey.  Prominent alumni include Patti Smith, singer and songwriter; Fred Madden, NJ State Senator and former acting director of NJ State Police; James Cahill, mayor of New Brunswick; Jack Collins, former NJ Assembly Speaker; Betty Castor, former president, University of South Florida, Florida state senator and Florida state education commissioner; Sharon Harrington, commissioner, NJ Casino Control Commission and former executive director, NJ Motor Vehicle Commission, and chair, NJ Council on the Arts; Jean and Ric Edelman, co-founders and principals, Edelman Financial Services; late Robert Hegyes, actor ('Welcome Back Kotter")> Ranked #91 in Top Public Schools, #171 in National Universities by 2019 US News & World Report, Best Colleges. 2016 acquisition for $1.95 million of 65-acre quarry tract four miles from main Glassboro campus which contains thousands of dinosaur fossils and plan to develop as Rowan Fossil Park with museum, laboratories, public trails and sponsored fossil digs, announced October 2016 $25 million pledge from alumni couple Jean and Ric Edelman, co-founders of Edelman Financial Services, one of largest independent financial management and advisory firms in US, to support preservation and development of Park, with it renamed as Jean and Ric Edelman Fossil Park. Recent construction includes public-private partnerships such as mixed-use building completed 2015 including 468 beds of student housing as well as publicly available private apartments, retail shops and outpatient medical facility; student housing complex opened fall 2016 with 1,400-beds and 550-seat dining hall. Sold 100 acres of land in Harrison Township for $11.5 million in 2016 to Inspira Health Network for new $326 million, 170-bed Inspira acute care hospital to replace current Woodbury facility, with new hospital scheduled to open 2019. Ali A. Houshmand named Rowan president June 2012 after serving as provost/senior vice president, CEO and interim president, prior teaching and administrative positions at University of Cincinnati and Drexel University
