Evolved from 1867 founding as Centenary Collegiate Institute by Newark Conference of United Methodist Church,as a coeducational preparatory school to a girls’ preparatory school (1910), a junior college for women (1940), a four-year women’s college (1976), a coeducational baccalaureate-degree-granting institution (1988), a master-degree-granting institution (1995), and now university after 2016 state approval with bachelor’s, master’s and professional certificate programs..Current enrollment about one-third male students. Recently added programs include Master of Arts in Happiness Studies (the first of its kind), as well as 2025–2026 programs in Automation & Controls Technology, Construction Engineering Technology, and an M.S. in Computer Science with concentrations in AI and Cybersecurity Main campus in Hackettstown, national-level 65-acre equestrian center located in Long Valley eight miles from main campus supports programs in business of horse breeding, racetrack management, also site of national equestrian competitions and events with outdoor eventing course, two indoor arenas and one outdoor arena. Partnership with New York Jets provides programs in such areas as sports management and social media marketing, also traditional strong relationship with candy-maker M&M Mars with large plant in Hackettstown. Off-campus learning centers serving some 1,100 undergraduate students and nearly equal number of adult and graduate students. First NJ college to require service education as condition of graduation. International students from some 20 nations. School of Professional Studies off-campus learning center based in Parsippany with satellite site in Edison provides working adults with accelerated evening and online degree programs at undergraduate (BSBA and AA) and Graduate (MBA) levels, added new accelerated Bachelor of Arts in Sociology with a concentration in Organizational Studies. Most popular programs Business, Management, Marketing, and Related Support Services. New programs include include data analytics, medical lab science, and sustainable practices, as well as 4+1 MBA, which enables students to earn undergraduate degree and MBA in just five years. Alumni include Bette Cooper, Miss America 1937, and Debbie Harry. lead singer of rock band Blondie. Dale Caldwell named 15th president effective July 2023, resigned following November 2025 election as NJ Lieutenant Governor, succeeded by .Bishop John R. Schol as president for a two-year term, a longtime member of  Centenary Board of Trustees,
