New Jersey State Bar Association

Headquarters in New Brunswick. Represents over 18,000 member attorneys, somewhat under half of those in practice in NJ. Sponsors educational, networking programs, specialized committees on specific legal areas such as litigation, real estate, corporate, tax, antitrust, technology, environment, etc. Encourages participation in voluntary pro bono activities including Military Legal Assistance Program; also sponsors Lawyer Assistance Program with free and confidential help for range of substance abuse, emotional, health problems and other personal issues; NJ State Bar Foundation supports charitable and educational causes. Conducts confidential reviews of prospective judicial and county prosecutor candidates and advises Governor on qualifications of candidates. Lobbies on issues such as malpractice insurance reform; judicial administration and funding; corporate management; and criminal law and corrections.

​New Jersey Association for Justice

Executive Director

Founded late 1940s, incorporated in 1976. Over 2,600 members in private practice and public service, paralegals, law clerks, law students and law school graduates not yet admitted to bar. Works to preserve and strengthen laws for safer products and workplaces, cleaner environment and quality health care. Educational Foundation provides ongoing legal education to attorneys, sponsors other programs to educate consumers about legal rights. Political Action Committee supports candidates in legislative and gubernatorial races.

American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey

​NJ chapter located in Newark of national ACLU founded 1920. Works through litigation and advocacy on behalf of individuals on issues of civil rights, free speech, privacy, also lobbies on bills in state legislature and ordinances of local municipalities, sponsors many public education and community organizing projects. ACLU-NJ Foundation funds litigation, educational programs. Recent cases, issues include immigration detention matters; bail reform; student free speech rights; civil asset forfeiture; restrictions on employer criminal record searches and inquiries.

Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers of New Jersey
Christopher Adams, Esq.
President

Established 1985, represents over 500 members of NJ criminal defense bar. Affiliate of National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers. Seeks to advocate for members facing disciplinary measures for zealous representation; protect individual constitutional rights; encourage cooperation among criminal defense lawyers; and promote public understanding of role of defense attorneys. Publishes online directory of members.

Association of the Federal Bar of
New Jersey

Kerri E. Chewning, Esq.
President

initially organized 1971, incorporated 1978. Comprised of attorneys, judges, others involved in matters before federal courts in NJ, including US District Courts in Newark, Trenton and Camden with over 20 judges. Promotes discussion among judges, attorneys, and federal law enforcement attorneys on issues of court administration and procedures. Partners with federal courts and US Attorney's office in reentry program seeking to reduce recidivism by assisting former federal prisoners overcome barriers to employment, housing etc.

Association of Corporate Counsel-New Jersey

Serves 1,300 members at over 350 corporations in Northern and Central New Jersey employed as corporate in-house counsel, as well as those in private firms serving in-house counsel. New Jersey Defense Association

Primarily composed of NJ defense attorneys, personnel of insurance companies, insurance claim professionals, self-insurers and other corporations substantially engaged in defense of damage suits or to claims administration. Sponsors networking and educational programs; lobbies for increased funding of courts, additional judges, other actions to ease court congestion and expedite trials. American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers-New Jersey Chapter

NJ chapter of American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers, national group of lawyers who practice divorce and family law founded 1962. Seeks to improve practice of divorce and family law and enhance respect for matrimonial lawyers. Fellows of Academy must have at least 10 years’ experience as lawyer and certified in family law by NJ Supreme Court. Fellows practice in all issues related to family law including divorce, collaborative divorce, prenuptial agreements, post-nuptial agreements, mediation, business valuation, legal separation, annulment, custody, property valuations, enhanced earning capacity, child support, alimony and rights of domestic partners. Publishes online directory of members.

​New Jersey Women Lawyers Association

Formed 1981 to advance interests of women attorneys through independent association operating separately from NJ State Bar Association. Currently exceeds 1,000 members. Advocates support for increased numbers of female judicial appointments, screens and endorses candidates. Sponsors educational and networking events and annual Gala honoring women lawyers from private, public and judicial sectors.

Garden State Bar Association-African American Lawyers for Justice

Founded 1975, oldest and largest NJ organization for African-American judges, lawyers and law students. Initially established by attorneys in Essex, Union and Hudson counties, expanded to statewide membership. Assists African-American and other minority lawyers in seeking judicial appointments. Young Lawyers Division composed of recent law school graduates and attorneys practicing less than six years. Annual Gala with achievement awards and announcements of scholarships.
