Founded in 1856 by Bishop James Roosevelt Bayley and named for his aunt, Elizabeth Ann Seton, the first native-born American saint. It is a private Catholic university affiliated with the Archdiocese of Newark. Its main 58-acre campus is in South Orange, with the School of Law located in Newark and health-sciences programs based at the Interprofessional Health Sciences campus in Clifton and Nutley. The Clifton/Nutley campus opened in 2018 and houses Seton Hall’s College of Nursing and School of Health and Medical Sciences. The Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, originally launched in partnership with Seton Hall, became an independent medical school in 2020, although Seton Hall continues to offer an exclusive joint bachelor’s/M.D. pathway with Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine.

The university reports more than 90 majors, about 150 student organizations, an undergraduate student body that is about 55% female and 45% male, and a freshman class in which about 80% live on campus. Its recent admissions profile lists students from 46 states and 43 countries, with an acceptance rate of about 69% and an average SAT score of 1328 among reporting students.

The university’s schools and colleges include the College of Arts and Sciences; Stillman School of Business; College of Human Development, Culture, and Media; College of Nursing; School of Diplomacy and International Relations; School of Health and Medical Sciences; School of Law; and Immaculate Conception Seminary School of Theology. The School of Diplomacy and International Relations, founded in alliance with the United Nations Association of the USA, prepares students for careers in international affairs, public service, business, law, and nonprofit leadership.

Academic and research centers include the Center for Catholic Studies, the Center for Community Research and Engagement, the Center for Peace and Conflict Studies, the Center for Sports Media, the Center for Vocation and Servant Leadership, the Institute of Judaeo-Christian Studies, the Buccino Leadership Institute, the Market Research Center, the Micah Institute for Business and Economics, and other programs supporting teaching, technology, public service, leadership, and interreligious scholarship.

Notable alumni include former New Jersey governors Chris Christie and Donald DiFrancesco; basketball commentators Bill Raftery and Dick Vitale; actor and athlete Chuck Connors; John Mooney, co-inventor of the three-way catalytic converter; Max Weinberg, drummer for Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band and former bandleader for Late Night with Conan O’Brien; investor and philanthropist Raymond Chambers; and U.S. Army chaplain Major Charles J. Watters, a posthumous Medal of Honor recipient.

Seton Hall has also faced recent leadership and governance controversies. President Joseph Nyre resigned in July 2023. In 2024, a former assistant dean at Seton Hall Law pleaded guilty in an embezzlement scheme; Reuters reported that she was sentenced to three years in prison in December 2024 for embezzling at least $1.3 million over more than a decade with two other law-school employees. Nyre filed suit against the university in 2024, but a judge dismissed his lawsuit in February 2026; Seton Hall’s countersuit against Nyre remained ongoing at that time.

Monsignor Joseph R. Reilly, a Seton Hall alumnus, priest, and longtime university administrator, was announced in April 2024 as Seton Hall’s 22nd president, effective July 1, 2024. His appointment drew criticism after reporting and litigation concerning a prior clergy-abuse investigation at Seton Hall’s seminaries. Reilly has not been accused of abuse, but reports alleged that he failed to report or properly handle allegations when he held seminary leadership roles. In 2025, Cardinal Joseph Tobin announced a third-party review of the matter, and related litigation over release of the earlier internal report continued into 2026.
