American Heart Association
(Robbinsville)
Nations' largest charity for cardiovascular diseases and stroke, leading cause of death in US and NJ, funded $3.8 billion in heart disease and stroke research since 1949. NJ headquarters in Robbinsville, holds events throughout state. US research funding $75.1 million 2015-16, NJ research grants of $2.6 million, primarily 13 awards to Rutgers totaling $2.6 million in 2015-16.

The Children''s Cardiomyopathy Foundation (Tenafly) National non-profit organization founded 2002 for pediatric cardiomyopathy, leading cause of sudden deaths and heart transplants in children under age 18. Provides referrals, family support, public education, funds for research chronic and potentially life-threatening heart disease affecting children of all ages

Deborah Hospital Foundation (Browns Mills)
Established 1974 to support Deborah Heart and Lung Center located in Burlington County which provides treatment of children with congenital heart disease in US and around world, also supports Deborah's clinical research for cardiac, pulmonary and vascular diseases. Grassroots Chapters and volunteer network of over 20,000 members serve in fundraising activities. Deborah now accepts most major insurance, but since founding in 1922 never issued direct bill to any patient.

Women's Heart Foundation (Hamilton Township)
Established 1986, national organization which designs and implements projects for prevention of heart disease in women. Provides education of women as consumers concerning heart disease as it affects them financially, physically and psychologically; advocates for research into diagnosis, prognosis, treatment and outcome of heart disease as it affects women, particularly minority women; supports women as caregivers; and designs and implements wellness and prevention programs for schools,

American Cancer Society New Jersey (New Brunswick)

NJ chapter of national organization founded 1913 by 10 doctors and 5 laypeople in NY City under name of American Society for the Control of Cancer, now leading private funder of research, also provides education, patient and family support. Publishes annual Cancer Facts & Figures statistical report, 2017 US estimated 1,688,780 new cancer cases diagnosed and 600,920 cancer deaths; NJ estimated 51,680 new cases diagnosed, 15,880 deaths.

Susan G. Komen Foundation North Jersey (Summit)
North Jersey chapter based in Summit serves Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Somerset, Sussex, Union and Warren counties; Central & South NJ served by Lawrenceville office. Funds research, also provides education, patient and family support. Except for skin cancers, breast cancer most common cancer among women in US. In 2016 in US, more than 240,000 cases of invasive breast cancer diagnosed in women and 2,600 in men. Estimated new 2017 NJ cancer cases 7,890, deaths 1,290. In 2013, (latest year for 50-state data) NJ had 5th highest breast cancer rate of US states with 135.5 out of 100,000 women who were diagnosed with or died from breast cancer during year.

The Valerie Fund (Maplewood)
Support for comprehensive health care of children with cancer and blood disorders, also provides family support. Established 1976 in memory of nine-year-old Valerie Goldstein by her parents, Ed and Sue, who were inducted 2017 into NJ Hall of Fame. Valerie Fund Children's Centers comprise largest network of healthcare facilities for children with cancer and blood disorders in NJ, and one of largest in US, host over 25,000 patient visits annually. NJ Centers at Morristown Medical Center, Monmouth Medical Center, Overlook Hospital, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center.

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society-New Jersey Chapter (Cranford)
NJ chapter of world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. Seeks cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improving quality of life of patients and their families. Identifies and funds most promising blood cancer research projects and forges partnerships with academic institutions, biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies to accelerate development of new therapies. NJ programs include School & Youth; Light The Night Walk; Team In Training; and Patient Services.

Cookies for Kids' Cancer (Califon)
National organization raising funds for research to develop new, improved treatments for pediatric cancer, leading disease killer of children in US, with 13,500 children diagnosed annually with disease. Provides annual research grants to develop less toxic, more effective treatments for children to five leading pediatric cancer centers: Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; Dana Farber Cancer Institute; Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center; St. Jude Children's Research Hospital; and Texas Children's Cancer Center. Supporters have held more than 5,500 events in all 50 states and 16 countries worldwide.

Myelodysplastic Syndromes (MDS) Foundation (Yardville)
Established by international group of physicians and researchers to provide ongoing exchange of information relating to MDS, group of diverse bone marrow disorders considered form of blood cancer in which bone marrow does not produce enough healthy blood cells, resulting in such symptoms as infections, anemia, spontaneous bleeding or easy bruising. Network provides patients with referrals to Centers of Excellence, contact names for available clinical trials, sharing of new research and treatment options between physicians, and extension of educational support. Since inception, conducted 14 international symposia.

Arms Wide Open Childhood Cancer Foundation (Marlboro)
Funds less toxic therapies for children with cancer to improve quality of life during treatment. Provided nearly $3 million in funding for 35 research grants and alternative treatment options in hospitals throughout US and Canada.

Lung Cancer Circle of Hope (Rochelle Park)
Founded 2006 by Susan Levin as a direct result of her family’s experience with lung cancer after late mother initially misdiagnosed because of no smoking history. Seeks to increase awareness of lung cancer symptoms, causes and treatments.

Beez Foundation (Somerset)
Founded by parents of Jennifer Beisswanger, who died at age 22 of complications from brain cancer. Created to raise money to support pediatric brain cancer research projects and related support activities for pediatric patients in cancer hospitals in NJ and NY, predominately Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Cancer Institute of NJ, Duke University and Ronald McDonald House.

Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey (New Brunswick)
Only National Cancer Institute designated Comprehensive Cancer Center in NJ, one of 47 in US. Operates as a consortium cancer center of Rutgers, Princeton University and Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. Conducts research including clinical trials of new treatments, facilitates transformation of laboratory discoveries into clinical practice. Opened May 2017 new clinical space for  Blood and Marrow Transplant Program and Hematologic Malignancies Programs as well infusion area. Formerly independent, merged 2013 into Rutgers upon absorption by Rutgers of most of programs of former University of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey pursuant to New Jersey Medical and Health Sciences Education Restructuring Act.

Cancer Support Community Central New Jersey (Bedminster)
National organization dedicated to understanding psychosocial impact of cancer on  lives of patients, family members and caregivers. Reaches one million people yearly, provides some $50 million in free services, largest employer of oncology licensed mental health professionals in US. Provides professionally led support groups, educational workshops, healthy cooking and nutrition classes, other activities to promote health and wellness. Current organization established 2009 through merger of The Wellness Community and Gilda’s Clubs Worldwide to become Cancer Support Community. Gilda's Clubs founded in memory of 'Saturday Night Live' comedienne Gilda Radner following her 1989 death from ovarian cancer, Gilda's Club South Jersey based in Linwood, satellite facility in Egg Harbor at AtlantiCare Cancer Care Institute.

Sharsheret  (Teaneck)
Sharsheret is Hebrew for "chain," only national organization supporting Jewish women and families of all backgrounds facing breast and ovarian cancer, served close to 70,000 women, families, health care professionals, community leaders, and students from all 50 states. Founded 2001 by Rochelle Shoretz, 28 year-old Jewish mother, after diagnosis with breast cancer, who organized and developed programs until death in 2015 after cancer recurrence. Programs include one-on-one counseling; networking; family support; educational outreach in communities and on college campuses.

- Diabetes

American Diabetes Association-New Jersey (Bridgewater)
Provides various educational, advocacy and support programs, focus on Type 2 diabetes characterized by high blood glucose levels caused by either a lack of insulin or the body's inability to use insulin efficiently which develops most often in middle-aged and older adults but can appear in young people. National network of over one million volunteers, membership of more than 500,000 people with diabetes.

JDRF-New Jersey Metro and Rockland County Chapter (Shrewsbury)
Founded 1970 as Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, later renamed as Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and subsequently as JDRF. Type 1 Diabetes commonly called “juvenile diabetes” because of frequent diagnoses in young children, but research now finds equal number of 110 children and adults diagnosed daily in US. Type 1 diabetes autoimmune disease in which pancreas stops producing insulin, hormone that enables people to get energy from food. Type 2 diabetes metabolic disorder in which pancreas still produces insulin but cannot use it effectively. Leading global organization funding Type 1 research with over $1 billion since founding, currently funding 50 human clinical trials of potential therapies.

- Transplantation

NJ Sharing Network (New Providence)
Operates program, part of national system, for recovery and placement of donated organs and tissue for those in need of life-saving transplant, most frequently for kidney and heart failures. Over 4,000 NJ residents currently awaiting transplantation of some 120,000 in US on waiting lists. 0ver 150 members on staff. Maintains transplant laboratory performing histocompatibility testing of organ donors and recipients which services area hospitals.

American Society of Transplantation (Mount Laurel)
National organization founded 1982, now includes some 3,500 researchers, surgeons, other professionals in field of transplantation. Sponsors annual American Transplant Congress jointly with American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Publishes information on recent research findings and surgical developments, sponsors grants for research, education. Recipient of highest 4-star rating of CharityNavigator.org
