New Jersey Audubon Society (Bernardsville)
Statewide membership organization founded 1897, one of oldest independent Audubon societies, no affiliation with National Audubon Society. Promotes conservation of land and water resources; knowledge of birds, mammals, other animals, and plants, especially endangered and threatened species; sponsors events and education programs; and maintains 8 wildlife sanctuaries, observatories and educational centers throughout state. Events include annual 'World Series of Birding' in which teams from across US seek to identify as many species as possible in 24-hour period. Advocates for conservation practices and legislation. Recipient of highest 4-star rating by CharityNavigator.org

Conserve Wildlife Foundation of New Jersey (Trenton)
​
Promotes land and water conservation, habitat restoration and  protection of wildlife that live and breed in, and migrate through NJ. Conducts research on species, populations and natural communities; Implements conservation plans on species or populations to slow declines and begin recovery; restores habitat for wildlife and other natural communities; educates public on wild heritage.

The Wildlife Society-New Jersey Chapter (Woodbine)
Founded 1937, parent organization based in Bethesda, MD, promotes networking and learning opportunities, professional and career development. Nearly 10,000 international members include scientists, managers, educators, technicians, planners, consultants, students and others who manage, conserve, and study wildlife populations and habitats.

Marine Mammal Stranding Center (Brigantine)
Founded 1978 by Robert Schoelkopf and wife Sheila Dean, has responded to over 4,800 strandings of whales, dolphins, seals and sea turtles washing ashore in NJ, occasionally called upon to assist with animals in other states. Based on Brigantine Island, next to NJ's largest wildlife refuge.

​SandyHook SeaLife Foundation
(Medford) Supports protection of marine environment through education, volunteerism and political action. Focus on status of highly migratory predators (sharks, swordfish, tuna and billfish), sustainable fisheries and marine animal populations.    


The Raptor Trust (Millington)
One of foremost wild bird rehabilitation centers in US in raptor (bird of prey) conservation and avian rehabilitation. Includes state-of-art hospital, quality exterior housing for several hundred birds, with many hawks, eagles, falcons and owls, and an education center. Founded 1968 by Leonard Soucy (1932-2014), naturalist, photographer, lecturer and author. Open to public year-round, 50,000 visitors annually. Offers on-site as well as outreach educational programs on raptor topics which can be adapted for age groups from pre-k to adults.

The Barnyard Sanctuary (Blairstown)
Rescues pet farm animals that have lost their homes due to financial, social, or physical issues of their current caregivers. Either relocates them to another home or sanctuary through adoption and placement service, or keep them on-site at its farm. Saved lives of nearly 3,000 farm animals, currently hosts approximately 700 farm animals. Located on 15-acre farm, seeking funds to purchase nearby 153-acre farm.

Mylestone Equine Rescue (Phillipsburg)
Established 1994. All-breed horse rescue and farm helping abused, neglected and unwanted horses and educating public to plight and suffering of unwanted horses. Provides regular veterinary care for on-site horses. Seeks to find adoptions for horses to new homes, but if unable provides sanctuary for horses for rest of their lives. Visits by prior appointment on weekends.


Second Call (Helmetta)
Founded 2012, thoroughbred adoption and placement program dedicated to NJ's off-the-track thoroughbreds.  Serves as exclusive "After Care Program" for Monmouth Park, seeks to ensure that retired racehorses find suitable placement, with transition after retraining for new tasks.

Horse Rescue United (Howell)
Rescue that saves and shelters horses of all breeds from abandonment, abuse, neglect, and slaughter, specializes in retraining and finding new homes for Standardbred horses.
W
henever possible, purchases slaughter-bound horses from auction and finds them homes, and also helps owner surrenders find placement. Visits by prior appointment.

Associated Humane Societies (Newark)
Founded 1906, largest animal sheltering system in NJ. Operates three shelters located in Newark, Forked River, and Tinton Falls. Forked River facility also includes Popcorn Park established 1977, Popcorn Park is a sanctuary for abandoned, injured, ill, exploited, abused or elderly wildlife, exotic and farm animals, and birds, as well as federally licensed zoo.

Ramapo-Bergen Animal Refuge (Oakland) 
Founded 1978 on merger of two separate animal rescue groups in Oakland and Teaneck. Evaluates and secures adoptive homes for dogs and cats; provides medical services and behavior therapy; operates no-kill shelter.

Liberty Humane Society (Jersey City)
Provides homeless and unwanted animals with shelter and care, fostering, and adoption; low-cost medical care to those in need; animal control services; visits to local schools, businesses and community groups providing educational activities and workshops in proper way to approach and greet animals, how to train pets and benefits of adoption.

St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center (Madison)
Founded 1939, operates animal shelters in Madison,  North Branch,  Everyday Adoption Center inside PetSmart, Mt. Olive and Noah's Ark Campus in Ledgewood. Services include pet adoption, humane education, pet food pantry, low-cost spay/neuter of community cats, pet helpline, and professional education. Also center for ASPCA behavior program for dogs that are victims of puppy mills, hoarding, or other abuse. Provides animal control services to several municipalities in Somerset and Morris counties.

SAVE (Montgomery)
Founded 1941, operates no-kill animal shelter for homeless companion animals in greater Princeton area comprising Lawrence, Hopewell, Montgomery and Cranbury. Results from  2006 merger with Friends of Homeless Animals founded 1998 with focus on animal rescue and care. Now largest shelter for companion animals in Princeton area, houses approximately 75 dogs and cats at a time, and cares for  average of 400 animals yearly.

Helping Hearts Equine Rescue (Perrineville)
Rescue, rehabilitation and placement of equines in need; assisting equines in situations of neglect, abuse or threat of slaughter located in, but not necessarily limited to Monmouth, Middlesex and Ocean Counties. Also educates public regarding standards of care required to maintain an equine as a riding partner and/or companion animal in a humane manner.

Animal Welfare Association (Voorhees)
Founded 1948, operates oldest and largest low-cost spay/neuter clinic, adoption center and no-kill animal shelter in South Jersey. Programs include adoptions, veterinary services, pet therapy, trap-neuter-return and humane education,​
