American Red Cross New Jersey (Fairfield) 
National organization founded 1881 by former teacher and Civil War nurse Clara Barton, who established one of NJ's first public schools in Bordentown in 1852. Responds to approximately 70,000 disasters in US every year, ranging from home fires to hurricanes that affect tens of thousands, to earthquakes that impact millions, provides shelter, food, health and mental health services. In 2016 in NJ, responded to 767 local disasters, helping 1,800 families displaced; trained 116,154 individuals with life-saving skills in preparedness, CPR, AED use, first aid and aquatics; provided 3,516 military family case services with emergency messages, helping families find assistance and/or get counseling and referrals. Offices also in Fairfield, Summit, Ocean Township, Pleasantville and Pennsauken.

Legal Services of New Jersey (Edison)
Provides legal aid for civil cases for indigent who cannot secure lawyer on their own. Also created Poverty Research Institute in 1997 to assemble data and other information that would assist in its mission of providing civil legal aid, including location, demographics, and other aspects of poverty. Maintains six Legal Services programs: 5 regional programs, which provide direct services to clients in all 21 counties through 23 local offices, and statewide coordinating office in Edison. Founded 1966, since inception provided representation in more than 2.4 million cases.

American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey (Newark)
​NJ ACLU affiliate of leading national organization founded 1920 dedicated to defending and extending civil liberties. Issues include discrimination, equal treatment, fairness, privacy, freedom of speech or religion. leader in the fight for equal opportunity regardless of skin color, gender, or sexual orientation. Recent NJ cases have included challenge to state policy in withholding public records; opposition to state funding support of religious schools; intervention to improve overcrowded and unsanitary living conditions at Passaic County Jail. Lobbies on bills in NJ legislature and ordinances in municipalities, also active in many public education and community organizing projects.

Partners (Montclair)
Founded 2002 as Partners for Women and Justice, non-profit public interest law firm working to aid those impacted by domestic violence and sexual assault, provides legal representation, advice and counseling sessions, advocates for procedural and legislative change to benefit victims.  Trained and worked with several hundred pro bono attorneys who have donated free legal services to  clients as they seek protective orders, safe custody and visitation arrangements and fair awards of child support and spousal support.

Pro Bono Partnership (Newark)
Network providing free business and transactional legal services to nonprofits in NJ, NY and CT. Recruits and supports volunteer attorneys with a range of specializations to help nonprofits achieve goals, avoid risk, and better serve their constituencies. Since founding in 1997, assisted more than 2,350 nonprofits.

New Jersey Association on Correction (Trenton)
Established 1961, provides support for survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault, women at risk of separation from their children due to child abuse and/or neglect, women in recovery and their children, people at risk for and living with HIV/AIDS, adult-ex-offenders, and youth who are at risk of becoming offenders. Seeks correctional alternatives to imprisonment, supports community rehabilitation, operates halfway houses, transitional and homeless housing throughout state. Services include case management, community support groups and social services, housing assistance, legal and financial assistance, transportation, linkage to medical personnel and facilities, personal care and counseling, crisis intervention and stabilization, life and living skills training, financial education and counseling, relocation assistance for survivors, vocational and educational training, and job placement.

Centurion (Princeton)
National non-profit organization founded 1983 by James McCloskey, who as ministry student attending Princeton Theological Seminary and serving  as a student chaplain at Trenton State Prison, met inmate Jorge De Los Santos serving life sentence for murder, successfully worked to reverse De Los Santos conviction and free him from prison, McCloskey subsequently established Centurion to aid other inmates to challenge wrongful convictions. Now works throughout US  to vindicate wrongly convicted, has freed 67 men and women in US who were serving life or death sentences for crimes. Annually evaluates over 1,100 new claims of innocence, generally takes on 1-2 new cases every year and handles some 25 ongoing cases by re-investigating the crime, uncovering lost and new evidence and witnesses, overturning false confessions. Board of directors includes best-selling author John Grisham; retired NJ Supreme Court Justice Mary Catherine Cuff; founder James McCloskey.

​Police Athletic League of Bergen County
(Hackensack)
One of several local PALs in NJ associated with police departments. Statewide PAL organization dissolved after questions on high management salaries, excessive fundraising costs and minimal program support. Bergen County PAL sponsors youth boxing, karate athletic programs, other local PALs offer other athletic, social programs. 

- Veterans


Home Front Hearts (East Brunswick) 
Commenced 2008 by military spouse Randi Cairns to support military families in need with assistance with resource referrals for medical, legal, financial aid, also ship boxes of clothes, shoes, school supplies, and winter wear to children in Afghanistan. Grant funding in 2010 expanded team, now helps hundreds of military families located across US.

Operation Chillout (Long Valley)
Commenced 2000 to help  group of homeless Viet Nam veterans living in open under railroad trestle in northern NJ, incorporated 2011 as charity. Outreach to end homelessness for veterans in NJ and parts of NE Pennsylvania. Collects and delivers supplies to homeless and agencies such as shelters and food kitchens that provide for their temporary care, including backpacks or duffle bags with warm clothing, toiletries, survival gear and information about local resources.

Welcome Home Vets of New Jersey (Whippany)
Provides immediate and long term assistance to assist soldiers, veterans and their families in need in NJ, including housing, financial, medical, and employment assistance.

New Jersey Vietnam Veterans' Memorial Foundation (Holmdel)
Oversees Museum, Memorial and Educational Center, first museum of its kind in US dedicated 1998. Profiles history of War, with emphasis on experiences in NJ. Memorial lists names of 1,562 state residents by day of year on which killed or listed as missing in action. Hosts educational and public programs within
