The following gives brief profiles of selected philanthropic foundations and corporate grantmakers located in or otherwise active in providing grants to nonprofit organizations and causes in New Jersey. Foundations support charitable activities by making grants to unrelated organizations, institutions or individuals for scientific, educational, cultural, religious, or other charitable purposes. They are established by individuals, families and corporations with their own boards of directors and receive funds from their organizers and other contributors which are deductible from federal taxes in accordance with regulations adopted by the Internal Revenue Service, with larger foundations required annually to file a Form 990 reporting their income and expenditures.

The Council of New Jersey Grantmakers is the leading organization of the state's philanthropic community, with its membership including more than 130 foundations, corporate giving programs, government and other public grantmaking organizations. Other national resources include the Foundation Center; GuideStar; FoundationSearch; Inside Philanthropy; the Council on Foundations; and CitizenAudit.org.

In addition to private foundations and grantmakers, the federal and state governments also have programs to support nonprofit organizations and causes. A directory and search tool of major federal programs is published at Grants.gov. Some of the most active New Jersey state grant programs are operated by the New Jersey Department of Human Services; the New Jersey Department of Health; the New Jersey State Council on the Arts; and the New Jersey Council for the Humanities.
